Cock O' The North
​

Cock o'the North est une marche militaire 6/8, un air  de cornemuse et une jig.

Le titre vient du surnom d'Alexander Gordon, 4ème Duc de Gordon, qui a créé en 1794 le "92nd Regiment of Foot", devenu plus tard les "Gordon Highlanders".

De compositeur inconnu, cet air apparut imprimé pour la 1ère fois en 1816 en tant  que morceau de violon. Il fut publié plus tard dans une collection de partitions pour cornemuse par Donald MacDonald en 1822, sous le titre de "Gairm n’an Coileach" (Scottish Gaelic: "The Cock’s Crow").

Une version de ce morceau, originaire de l'ile de Whalsay, existe en tant que reel sous le titre "Jumping John".

 

Cette marche a toujours été utilisée par les Gordon Highlanders, bien qu'elle ne soit devenu leur marche régimentaire officielle qu'en 1933, remplaçant alors Hielan' Laddie. Même si elle est fortement rattachée aux Gordons, elle a également été utilisée par d'autres régiments des Highlands.
